As mentioned in an earlier blog post, Sharon has been gimping along since arriving in the UAE. This has meant a combination of crutches and wheelchair, to be able to see the sights. This has given us a unique insight to the attitude of the Emirate people, both residents and expats, to the challenges of people with mobility issues.

First of all, they do not refer to people as disabled, or handicapped. The national word is “people of determination” and this concept seemed very respectful and humane to us. The people we encountered, from the hotel staff, to the staff at the Burj Khalifa, the palace and grand mosque, all bent over backwards to help us. There was no pity, or indignation, but respect and kindness. We all noticed it.

Despite the dark money problems, traffic challenges, and possible exploitation of foreign workers, there is a peaceful and helpful attitude in the UAE, which we noticed time and time again. Their kindness was on display constantly. Everyone uses turn signals! We don’t remember ever seeing someone change a lane without their blinker on. When Sharon had to go to the lavatory, at a restaurant or airport, someone would escort her to make sure doors were opened and she could manage. Our guides indicated that there is a belief that your business is your business. Their culture is not judgmental, nor they do assume to know what is best for you. They are putting out massive “golden rule” vibes which we appreciated and found lovely.

Tell them to send some manners and decorum to our new president-elect’s way. Glad you are getting through and moving on in your travels. I love your stories!

We could all use a large dose with endless refills of such compassion and kindness. “People of Determination” is a phrase we should all adopt as we navigate the uncertainties of our “new world order.”
