This has to be the friendliest place on earth! Our ship was met by a fun band at port, playing American tunes with an island flair, though it was already 80 degrees at 8am in the morning. Driving down the road on our way to the beach, we were greeted with “Bula!” by truck drivers, the roadside marketeers, school children and those waiting for buses. Everywhere we went we were greeted with “Bula!” and we enjoyed the wonderful spirit of these people.

We spent the day at a private Fijian beach, enjoying the 87-degree crystal clear waters. Fiji has 300 islands but most of the population of 940,000 live on the two largest islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Suva, the capital of Fiji and on Viti Levu, is where we made port. Fiji was a british colony until 1970, when it gained independence. The primary industries are mahogany, tourism and sugar cane.

We also learned that China has been investing heavily in Fiji. They have built roads and railways, they’ve invested in private schools for their workers and even built and relocated a hospital to get it on higher ground to avoid yearly flooding.

Next stop in 2 days: Auckland, New Zealand.
