Fair London

We arrived to London 1 hour early, due to a hearty tailwind, and took a cab to our hotel. We’re staying at the Hilton Doubletree Victoria Station which is super convenient to buses, the Underground and trains. Luckily, our room was ready and we crashed for a much-needed nap, then ending the day at a local pub, enjoying fish and chips.

London, population 9M, has a charm that many large metropolitan cities lack. Maybe it’s the history, or the architecture, or the many parks…but it never disappoints. We started our second day with one of Sharon’s old friends, John Lewis, which also never disappoints. John Lewis is the quintessential English department store, which even if you don’t buy anything, is still fun to walk around as the displays are wonderful.

Next, we went to another perennial favorite, Fortnum and Mason. This place is another feast for the eyes; from perfectly packaged teas, to cases of sweets and chocolates, to the fourth floor, where a lovely British high tea is served. We were introduced to Fortnum a couple decades ago by Marshall’s dear friend, Stinor Gimble. We enjoyed our tea service, reminisced, and toasted our friend.

We walked around a bit and had a gin & tonic at Mr. Fogg’s Gin Club, before meeting Sharon’s sister Steph and brother-in-law Dave for dinner. Mykonos Victoria is a quaint Greek restaurant two blocks from Victoria Station and we had a wonderful meal there. The staff were excellent and sang a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday. Yes, today is Sharon’s birthday and it was a great one!

Tomorrow: Shuttle to Southampton and embarkation to Regal Princess

We’ve done this exact trip a couple of times. It is a great itinerary and each time we’ve done it we always see new places to love. London is quite possibly my favorite city in the world and we go there every year. Have a great birthday trip to the “old sod!”
