Interacting with and learning about the Maasai was an unexpected and pleasant surprise of the trip. Our initial interactions were having them protect us as we walked around the camps at night. Always friendly, always watching. Then we got to see them perform traditional dances and learn about their culture, by visiting a traditional Maasai village.

Our last guide, Joseph, was Maasai and he shared a wealth of insight during our long drives. While most Maasai remain committed to the traditional lifestyle of nomadic herdsman, others are adapting to the ever-changing world around them, learning new trades and ways of providing for their families. Creating unique gifts for the tourism industry, providing guiding services, and working at safari camps, keeps them close to home and their beloved nature.
